What to Expect During Medical Detox

Medically reviewed for accuracy byDr. Courtney Scott, MD· July 2026
One of the biggest reasons people delay getting help is fear of the unknown. Understanding what medical detox actually involves can make the decision far less frightening, and a lot more hopeful.
Here's what the process typically looks like from start to finish.
Step 1: Assessment and Intake
When you arrive, our medical team completes a thorough assessment, your substance use history, physical and mental health, and any co-occurring conditions. This lets us build a detox plan tailored specifically to you, so your care is safe and effective from the very first hour.
Step 2: Medically Supervised Stabilization
This is the core of detox. As your body clears the substance, our clinicians monitor you around the clock, manage withdrawal symptoms with medication, and keep you hydrated, nourished, and as comfortable as possible. For alcohol and opioids in particular, medication-assisted treatment (MAT) can dramatically ease symptoms and reduce risk.
Step 3: Support and Transition to Treatment
Detox is the first step, not the last. Throughout your stay you'll have emotional and psychological support, and as you stabilize we help you plan what comes next, individual therapy, group therapy, and a relapse-prevention plan, so you leave with a clear path forward rather than starting over alone.
How Long Does Detox Take?
Most detox programs last between 3 and 10 days, depending on the substance, how long it's been used, and your overall health. Your care team gives you a clear timeline during your assessment, so you always know what to expect.
