Signs You or a Loved One May Need Medical Detox

Signs You or a Loved One May Need Medical Detox

Medically reviewed for accuracy byDr. Courtney Scott, MD· July 2026

It can be hard to know when substance use has crossed the line into dependence, and even harder to admit it. Recognizing the signs early can be lifesaving, because withdrawal from certain substances is genuinely dangerous without medical care.

If several of the signs below sound familiar, it may be time to speak with a medical detox program in Pasadena or your area.

Physical Signs of Dependence

  • Needing more of a substance to feel the same effect (tolerance)
  • Shaking, sweating, nausea, or headaches when not using
  • Trouble sleeping, restlessness, or a racing heart during periods without use
  • Using in the morning or to 'feel normal'

Behavioral and Emotional Signs

  • Being unable to cut back or stop despite wanting to
  • Neglecting work, school, or family responsibilities
  • Secrecy, isolation, or using alone
  • Mood swings, anxiety, irritability, or depression
  • Continuing to use despite clear consequences to health or relationships

When Withdrawal Becomes an Emergency

Some withdrawal symptoms are medical emergencies. Seizures, severe confusion, hallucinations, a very high heart rate, or delirium tremens (DTs) require immediate care, call 911. These risks are exactly why detoxing under medical supervision, rather than alone, is so important.

Which Substances Require Medical Detox

Alcohol, benzodiazepines (like Xanax, Valium, and Klonopin), and opioids (including heroin and fentanyl) carry the highest withdrawal risks and should always be detoxed under medical supervision. Stimulants like cocaine and methamphetamine, and substances like cannabis, are generally less physically dangerous but still benefit greatly from monitored, supportive detox.
